Multicultural Diversity Reflection Paper - 1796 Words

The first half of the course material has included some understandably difficult, but important topics of discussion. I recognize that as a Black student, my processing of the course material was probably much different from my White counterparts. There were several examples throughout the material that I could relate to personally and professionally. The readings and class discussions have provided me with both personal and professional development and insight. This not only includes knowledge about myself, but others that I may work alongside and/or serve as a mental health provider. Reflecting on the material we covered the past few weeks, I will discuss in chronological order some of my reactions to the course material, readings, and†¦show more content†¦The American Psychological Association’s multicultural guidelines will serve as reference in assisting me in establishing that multicultural competency in my development. Week two’s discussion on othering a nd the multicultural journey was insightful. The Hayes (2008) was extremely informative in discussing ways to think about cultural competency when interviewing a client. Sue (2007) really resonated with me because I could relate to the material on a very personal level. As an African American first year graduate student in a predominately White profession and program, I could relate to some of the emotions around racism, micro-aggressions, and prejudices. I have not only experienced them as a minority, but realized that I have bias and prejudices of my own. The dialogue we had in class was useful because it challenged our current perspectives in a safe space. These texts provided wording I could use to describe my thoughts academically. Week three’s material on conceptualizing power and privilege and the political dimension of mental health introduced some very controversial, but important topics of discussion. In Sue Sue’s discussion on systemic oppression and mistr ust/trust, I learned that engaging with the client consistently on their level can open up the possibility for the therapist to be trusted. This is why I am against the idea of color-blindness.
